Description
This is a Toronto legend -- indeed, a Canadian legend. A rock and roll legend. The El Mocambo tavern has hosted the greats of the music world, including the infamous gig by the Rolling Stones in 1977. Sadly, this sign can no longer be seen; the new owners of this historic tavern on Spadina Avenue took it down a few years ago and replaced it with a replica early in 2019. The club has been closed for several years and has yet to reopen, but Torontonians are hopeful it will be back to life soon. I am so glad to have shot this sign before it was taken down for good.
A colour, squared version of this photograph was featured in the Signs of Life exhibit at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Alhambra, California, and was also featured in the #Signgeeks exhibit at the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale, California (the Signgeeks is a collective of photographers specializing in shooting vintage signage, particularly neon, of which I am a founding member). I'm pleased to include that photograph as well as this one in my image gallery here.
