Artist's Description
This is a Toronto legend -- indeed, a Canadian legend. A rock and roll legend. The El Mocambo tavern has hosted the greats of the music world, including the infamous gig by the Rolling Stones in 1977. Sadly, this sign can no longer be seen; the new owners of this historic tavern on Spadina Avenue took it down a few years ago and replaced it with a replica early in 2019. This photograph was featured in the Signs of Life exhibit at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Alhambra, California, and was also featured in the #Signgeeks exhibit at the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale, California (the Signgeeks is a collective of photographers specializing in shooting vintage signage, particularly neon, of which I am a founding member). I'm pleased to include this photograph as well as a black and whit...
About Lenore Locken
My passion for photography began when I was just eight years old and received an inexpensive Kodak camera as a gift. Many years and many cameras have come and gone but the passion has only grown. I'm always eager to hit the road in search of new discoveries, maybe an old diner or historic graveyard, perhaps a roadside motel or an abandoned drive-in. My photographs have been featured in galleries, publications, and private collections worldwide. Recently, I participated in the Signs of Life show in Los Angeles at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Alhambra, California. This show featured photographs of vintage signs shot in the United States, Canada, and other countries, all shot by...
